Identifying Extraneous Details
When reading a passage or writing your own, ask yourself these questions to help identify extraneous details:
- Does this detail directly support the main idea or point of the passage?
- Is this detail necessary for understanding the plot, characters, or argument?
- Does this detail add to the overall meaning or message of the writing?

To practice identifying extraneous details, try the following exercises:
- Read a short story or article and highlight any details that seem unrelated to the main idea or point. Then, try to rewrite the passage without those extraneous details.
