Book Sense Study Guide

1. Cover Recognition

   Encourage children to identify and describe the cover of a book. Ask questions such as "What do you see on the cover?" and "What do you think this book might be about based on the cover?"

2. Title and Author Understanding

   Teach children that the title is the name of the book, and the author is the person who wrote it. Show them how to locate and read the title and author's name on a book.

3. Illustration Analysis

   Help children understand that illustrations can give clues about the story. Encourage them to describe what they see in the pictures and make predictions about the story based on the illustrations.

4. Text Comprehension

   Guide children to begin recognizing letters, words, and simple sentences in a book. Encourage them to point to the words as they read and discuss what the story is about.

5. Story Elements

   Discuss basic story elements such as characters, setting, and plot. Ask questions like "Who are the characters in the story?" and "Where does the story take place?"
